Assassination Foiled, Congo TV Reports
A policeman pounced on an army officer who was about to shoot at Congo’s newly elected President Pascal Lissouba from among a crowd at Brazzaville airport Friday, Congo television reported.
It said the officer, whose name was given as Ngot, was under police guard. The incident happened as a crowd was welcoming Lissouba back to the capital after a visit to a provincial town in the central African nation.
Despite the attempted attack, Lissouba, whose election victory over rival Bernard Kolelas was announced Thursday, went on to address a public meeting in Brazzaville.
No further details were immediately available.
