What Are the Motives Behind Orange Unified Recall Attempt?

The Aug. 10 article, “Orange Unified: School Board of Hard Knocks,” does not reflect my actual voting record as a trustee on the demotion of three principals and other matters, and repeats the same irresponsible accusation that the recall committee has been communicating in its circulars to our community.

On May 14--together with Barry Resnick, who is not subject to recall--I voted against the reassignment of any of the three principals. I voted against the demotion of the assistant superintendent, and I voted against the termination of the superintendent and any payoff. I also voted against any increase in the interim superintendent’s salary and, on June 25, I voted against the allocation of $5,000 in fees to provide counseling services to improve the relationship between the board and the superintendent. In these last three actions, Dr. Resnick and I were joined by fellow board member Maureen Aschoff.

These decisions are a matter of record in the official minutes of the Orange Unified School District board meetings of May 14 and June 25, 1992. My decision to oppose the disposition of the three principals was based upon my research and was communicated in writing to the other members of the board on March 18, three weeks before any recall action was initiated. For ethical reasons, my decision was not disclosed to the public until the official vote on May 14.

If my opposition to these actions had been made public before the recall was initiated on April 2, a recall against this board member should not have occurred if the discharge of the principals is the real reason for the recall. Since I opposed all of these measures along with Dr. Resnick, who is not being recalled, and I am still being recalled, what really are the motives of the recall committee?
