In response to “Police K9 Unit Ordered to Put Bark Before Bite,” Aug. 22:

Again, the Police Commission has diminished the effectiveness and safety of the Los Angeles Police Department. Having the dogs bark before biting will only alert the sometimes-armed criminals that a police dog and its handler are present. Apparently the commission does not realize that the K9 unit’s function is to apprehend felons without injury to our officers. Perhaps the commission will consider poodles in the future.
