Palos Verdes Teen-Ager to Play Sanchez Vicario : U.S. Open: Lindsay Davenport will take on the fifth-seeded player in a second-round match.

Lindsay Davenport will be in the spotlight twice today at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York City.

The 16-year-old from Palos Verdes will play fifth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain in a second-round singles match in the morning session, then team with Brian Dunn of Brandon, Fla., for a first-round mixed doubles match against Andrea Strnadova of Czechoslovakia and Mark Kratzmann of Australia. The mixed doubles match will be held on the grandstand court during the evening session.

Davenport earned the match with Sanchez Vicario by defeating Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia, 6-4, 6-4, in a first-round match Monday.

Davenport was on the losing side in a first-round doubles match Wednesday involving three players with South Bay ties. Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills joined Cammy MacGregor, a 1987 Palos Verdes High graduate, for a 6-1, 7-5, win over Davenport and Chanda Rubin of Lafayette, La.

Another 1987 Palos Verdes High graduate was also a winner Wednesday. Stella Sampras and Tami Whitlinger of Neenah, Wis., eliminated Kristin Godridge of Australia and Alexandra Fusai of France, 6-2, 6-2.

Po, 20, who said last month that she would retire from tennis after the Open to return to UCLA as a student, meets Nicole Arendt of Princeton, N.J., in another second-round match today. Po advanced Monday with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Julie Steven of Wichita, Kan.

Arendt is 175th on the Virginia Slims computer rankings and needed to win three qualifying matches to earn a spot in the main draw. The 23-year-old was a finalist at the 1990 NCAA women’s tournament.

Nicole London of Rolling Hills Estates, a qualifier, plays Rachel McQuillan of Australia today. London defeated Susan Sloan-Lundy of Lexington, Ky., 6-3, 6-4, on Monday.
