PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Gainer Learns About NFL Job Security

At noon on Wednesday, Derrick Gainer was practicing kickoff returns at the Raiders’ training headquarters in El Segundo.

At 1 p.m., he was put on waivers to make room for quarterback Vince Evans, who was re-signed.

Such is life in the NFL during cutdown week as the openings on the 47-man rosters dwindle to a precious few.

This is not expected to be the Raiders’ final move.

With Monday’s release of Napoleon McCallum, the team is down to only Steve Smith at fullback, who will start with Eric Dickerson in the backfield in Sunday’s season opener at Denver.

Running back Marcus Allen remains questionable for Sunday because of a bone bruise in his foot.

The other injured Raiders are safety Eddie Anderson (leg) and tight end Andrew Glover (hamstring), both listed as probable.

The Raiders have signed five of the players they waived Monday for their practice squad: receivers Daryl Hobbs and Ty Montgomery, running back/tight end Kevin Smith, defensive end Ferric Collons and offensive lineman Rich Stephens.
