No Action on Rent Cuts

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has delayed for two weeks a decision on a controversial plan to reduce the rent the county receives from the Marina City Club athletic club.

Developer Jerome Snyder has threatened to close the club permanently if the county does not agree to cut the rent from 15% to 6% of monthly dues and initiation fees. An appraisal supported the rent reduction, which would cost the county an estimated $178,500 annually in lost revenue.

Like all businesses in the publicly owned marina, the Marina City Club operates on a long-term lease with the county. Snyder has long argued that he has suffered unacceptable losses from the club’s operations.

In addition to the rent reduction, Snyder wants to establish a new club with new members and shift a share of the cost of maintaining the swimming pools, tennis courts and other facilities to residents of surrounding condominiums and apartments.
