A Sylmar man armed with a revolver who threatened to commit suicide was placed in psychiatric care early Sunday after he kept Los Angeles police at bay outside his house for nearly four hours.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Olive View Medical Center for observation after the standoff in the 13200 block of Foothill Boulevard. The incident ended about midnight Saturday, Sgt. Sol Polen said.

The man, who is in his mid-20s, called police about 8 p.m. Saturday and said he wanted to kill himself. When officers arrived, the man refused to let them in. About 20 officers, including members of the Special Weapons and Tactics team, surrounded the house.
