Man Arrested in Death of Mother
The son of a 76-year-old woman was arrested Sunday on suspicion of homicide after they found her body in their home in the 200 block of Avenida Cabrillo, police said.
Lt. Stephen Bernardi said Clifford Burgess, 43, was arrested at his residence after they discovered the body of his mother, Mary Burgess, lying in her bedroom. She had been dead a few hours.
Burgess called police about 8:35 a.m. for help after he cut his wrist during a suspected suicide attempt, Bernardi said.
“As a result of the investigation, the son was arrested and transported to (Samaritan Medical Center-San Clemente) for treatment of his wounds,” Bernardi said.
After treatment, Burgess was taken to County Jail, where he was being held on suspicion of murder.
An autopsy is expected today to determine the exact cause of Mary Burgess’ death.
