NO JOBS: The real estate slump means 6,000 local construction workers lost their jobs in the last year--and nearly 17,000 are gone since commercial building peaked in 1988. The remaining 51,000 are worried: The local construction industry may never get as big as it was before it built too many office towers in the late 1980s. . . . For the unemployed, the fastest-growing types of jobs in the county, says the state Employment Development Department, are low-paying service jobs like the ones in fast food restaurants and hotels.
