Rain fell at the right time for Darrell Waltrip, cutting short the Southern 500 at Darlington, S.C., and giving the three-time Winston Cup champion his first victory in NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway event.

Waltrip was on lap 295 of a scheduled 367 on the 1.366-mile Darlington Raceway oval when the rain began. Within moments, NASCAR officials red-flagged the event. After a 1-hour 51-minute wait, the race was declared official and the 45-year-old Waltrip had his second consecutive victory and the 84th of his career, moving him into a tie with retired Bobby Allison for third on the all-time list.
