Goalie Victor Nogueira and defender Terry Woodberry, members of the 1992 MSL champion Sockers, will join three former Sockers and Coach Ron Newman on the U.S. national five-a-side team that will compete in the indoor World Cup in October in Hong Kong.

Forward Jim Gabarra, defender George Fernandez and goalie Otto Orf also made the roster. Socker midfielder Tim Wittman could be a late addition.

Newman also is trying to secure players from the national “outdoor” team for the tournament. On that roster are former Sockers Brian Quinn, Fernando Clavijo and Hugo Perez.

“It would be quite a thrill,” Newman said, “to put a full San Diego unit on the field at some point in the competition.”

The U.S. won the bronze medal in the inaugural five-a-side World Cup in 1989.

AWARDS

Pieter d’Arnaud, a member of Mesa College’s championship cross country and track and field teams, was named 1992 California Community College Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

D’Arnaud, 19, a graduate of Mt. Carmel High where he is the cross country coach, compiled a 3.88 grade-point average during his two years at Mesa College while helping the school win the 1992 Pacific Coast Conference titles in cross country and track and field.

Despite his athletic endeavors, d’Arnaud still found time to take notes in classes for deaf students and tutored others in math.
