‘Sneakers’ Races to the Top Spot

The high-tech caper movie “Sneakers” pulled off a mission impossible by uncovering a gold mine at the box office on the usually slow post-Labor Day weekend. With grosses for other films falling way off, “Sneakers” gobbled up about one-third of the pie. Also new to the Top 10, but doing tepid business, were the gruesome “Hellraiser III” and the sailing adventure “Wind.”
* The political satire “Bob Roberts,” scored a hefty $400,000 on 40 screens, and the re-release of “Blade Runner” showed even stronger numbers: $630,000 on 58 screens. In contrast, “Crossing the Bridge,” from Disney/Touchstone, did a slow $243,600 on 235 screens.
