A Coronado man who was prominent in the Tijuana, Mexico, business community was shot to death in his car by gunmen in a passing vehicle, police said.
Alejandro Cazares Ledesma, 31, was fatally wounded about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in Imperial Beach and died at Coronado Hospital, officials said. His 29-year-old driver, whose name was withheld by authorities, also was wounded but was reported in good condition after surgery.
Sgt. Jim Cooke of the sheriff’s homicide squad said a high-velocity weapon, possibly an automatic weapon, was used by the gunman or gunmen.
In Tijuana, a Baja California State Police source suggested that Cazares’ death was an underworld hit, saying he had associated with drug traffickers and owned a Tijuana topless bar.
