DOWNTOWN : Hotel Slumlord Case Continued

The owners of the 265-room Pacific Grand Hotel, where city and county inspectors reportedly found numerous cockroaches, broken toilets, locked fire escapes and backed-up sewage, have had their arraignment on slumlord charges postponed until Oct. 29.

Western Pacific International Inc. and executives Junn Hsiong Hsiao, 56, of Palos Verdes Estates and Song Lieng Lee, 44, of Hacienda Heights are charged with 30 misdemeanor counts of health, fire and building code violations at the hotel at 416 S. Spring St.

The owners allegedly failed to fix the many problems despite several warnings from the Slum Housing Task Force. Defense attorneys last week told Los Angeles Municipal Commissioner John Rafferty that Western Pacific is taking care of the problems.

Defense attorney Jim Morris also said he hopes to have charges against Lee and Hsiao dismissed because they both left the company three years ago. But Deputy City Atty. Michael R. Wilkinson said Hsiao and Lee are listed on ownership papers filed with the state.
