CROSS-COUNTRY : Belmont--Leader of Pack

Belmont High’s cross-country teams swept all four divisions against three of the top City Section teams in a nonconference meet Thursday at Griffith Park.

In the boys varsity meet, five Sentinel runners finished in the Top 12 to win the team competition with 43 points. They were led by Wilburd Estrada, who came in fourth in 14:45.

Defending City champion Bell was second with 54 points, followed by Birmingham with 55 and Taft with 87. The Sentinels have won eight of the past 10 City titles under Coach Gordie Weisenburger, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Birmingham’s Alvaro Mejia, the defending City champion, won in 14:40. Bell’s Juan Camacho placed second with a time of 14:45, and Bell’s Dennis Vela was third at 14:51.

In the girls varsity race, Belmont had the top four finishers and six of the top seven. Belmont, the three-time defending champion, won with 16 points, followed by Bell with 54.

Belmont’s Patty Trejo won in 18:09, followed by teammates Alma Herrera with 19:09, Auria Roberto with 19:10 and Yolanda Gomez with 19:15. The Sentinels also won the junior varsity and freshman races.
