A county bomb squad dismantled a pipe bomb that a man had discovered under the driver’s seat of his car in the Hughes Aircraft Co. parking structure, police said Wednesday.

Hughes employee Yasutaka A. Nakamoto, 39, at first thought his car had been burglarized because the window had been broken, Sgt. Andy Gonis said. He then found the device under the seat.

A Hughes security agent reported the device to police at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Police Sgt. Mike McDonough said. The parking structure is at 500 Superior Ave.

Gonis said bomb squad investigators on Wednesday were determining what the device contained. But police declined to further describe the bomb or why the device may have been placed in Nakamoto’s car, saying the incident was still under investigation.

McDonough said police did not have to order any precautionary evacuations at the plant, which produces microelectronics. There were no reported injuries and no suspects, police said.
