It’s in the numbers: Randy Vataha, the former Rancho Alamitos quarterback who became a wide receiver at Stanford and in the NFL, will be on hand when his jersey number is retired during halftime ceremonies of the Garden Grove-Rancho Alamitos game Friday night.
“We are going to hang his jersey (No. 10) in the gym for being a good role model for our kids,” Rancho Alamitos Coach Mark Miller said.
Vataha attended Rancho Alamitos from 1963-67. He then played wide receiver two years at Golden West College and two years at Stanford, where he was the main target for Jim Plunkett.
In 1971, Vataha was drafted by the Rams and waived during training camp. He later signed with New England and again teamed with Plunkett. Vataha played with the Patriots through 1976 and with Green Bay in 1977. He finished his NFL career with 188 receptions and 23 touchdowns.
Vataha is now a sports agent with Bob Woolf Associates Inc. in Boston.
