Pirates’ Leyland Voted Tops in NL

Jim Leyland of the Pittsburgh Pirates was named National League manager of the year Wednesday. Leyland, who guided the Pirates to their third consecutive NL East title this season, was voted first on 20 of 24 ballots to beat rookie manager Felipe Alou of the Montreal Expos.
Atlanta’s Bobby Cox finished third.
It was the second time in the three seasons that Leyland has been named manager of the year in voting by the Baseball Writers Assn. of America.
