Mississippi State Blocks Kentucky’s Last-Chance Field Goal to Win, 37-36
Jeff Artigues blocked a 43-yard field-goal attempt as time expired to preserve No. 24 Mississippi State’s 37-36 victory over Kentucky in a Southeastern Conference game Saturday night.
Mississippi State, 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the SEC, scored with 37 seconds left when Greg Plump completed a five-yard pass to Willie Harris and Kenny Roberts ran for the two-point conversion.
Doug Pelfrey kicked a school-record five field goals for Kentucky (4-4, 2-4) before Artigues broke through to block his sixth attempt.
The Wildcats took a 36-29 lead with 2:25 left when Damon Hood scored his second touchdown from a yard out. He scored earlier from the one for a 29-21 lead, but Mississippi State tied the score, 29-29, when Tony Jones fumbled but recovered in the end zone for a touchdown, and Michael Davis ran for a two-point conversion.
