PRACTICAL VIEW : A Quick History of Cat-Box Fillers

Where does cat-box filler come from?

It was invented in 1948 by Edward Lowe, who was working in his father’s sawdust business in Vandalia, Mich., selling absorbent clay to soak up oil and grease.

When a friend asked him for some sand for her cat’s litter box, he gave her a bagful of the clay. When she returned for more, he realized he was on to something, eventually named it Kitty Litter and was in business.

Lowe dominated the field for years, but today there are dozens of companies that produce cat-box filler.

Most litters are made from a crystalline clay mineral known for its porous quality.

The clay is found only in the Midwest, in Central California and on the Georgia coast.
