WOODLAND HILLS : Equestrian Crossing Over Freeway OKd
Construction of an equestrian crosswalk over the Ventura Freeway at the Valley Circle interchange has been approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
The crossing will cost $236,000, which will be split between state parks bond act money and funds provided by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
The state Department of Transportation is improving the freeway overpass at Valley Circle Drive, but budget reductions have forced the department to eliminate one of the two sidewalks, which horse riders had hoped to use.
In the past, some riders had used a culvert that passes under the freeway near that location, but county employees reported that its bumpy base offered uneven footing for the horses and its low overhead required riders to dismount.
The cost of enlarging the culvert for horse use was estimated at $663,000, nearly three times the cost of adding the horse crosswalk.
The supervisors voted approval Tuesday.
