Sockers Ask Fans to Help Design New Logo for Team

In an effort to increase community awareness, the Sockers on Wednesday asked fans to submit ideas for a new club logo.

The old logo has been in use since 1980. The new one takes its place in January.

“When the Major Soccer League ceased operations, many San Diegans got the impression that the Sockers died with it,” said chairman Oscar Ancira. “Encouraging the people of San Diego to help create a new identity is one of the best ways to let the community and our fans know that the team . . . is still very much alive.”

The contest is open to everyone regardless of age, artistic ability or design experience. Entries will be taken by the club up to Dec. 20.

Socker personnel will choose the winner, who will be awarded $500 plus four downstairs season tickets for as long as the logo is used on Socker uniforms. The designer of the second-place entry will receive $250 and two downstairs season tickets for 1993, and the third-place artist will receive a pair of season tickets for 1993.

Former Sockers Fernando Clavijo, George Fernandez, Jim Gabarra, Victor Nogueira and Terry Woodberry have been named to the final roster of the U.S. national indoor team that will compete in the World Indoor Championships beginning Monday in Hong Kong.

Socker Coach Ron Newman also is with the team as a coaching adviser. The rest of the roster includes: Jeff Agoos (Dallas Sidekicks), Chico Borja (Wichita Wings), Ted Eck (Colorado Foxes), Dale Ervine (Wichita Wings), Andy Schmetzer (Cleveland Crunch), Mike Windischman and P.J. Johns.
