PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Hasn’t Seen Anything Like It

Art Shell has been in the Raider organization for 25 years, more than half his life.

He has been a Hall of Fame tackle, an assistant coach and now the head coach.

But none of those 25 seasons have been quite like this one. He has never seen a Raider team struggle as much as this 3-6 squad.

“I told the team the other day,” Shell said, “that I’ve never gone through this before. This is a new experience for me as it is for a lot of them. Never in my wildest dreams would I think we’d be going through something like this right now. It’s never happened to me before, and I hope to God it never happens again.

“We learn from it. We’ve just got to fight. You can’t give up. I’m not a quitter and this team is not a quitter.

“You look at the films and you see all the things that have gone wrong and you look at the small, minute mistakes that happened in the course of a game and you say, ‘If we don’t do these things, then instead of being 3-6, we’re 5-4 or 6-3,’ or something like that.”

Look for wide receiver Alexander Wright to continue to play more, backing up Willie Gault and Tim Brown.

Wright, obtained last month in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys, caught his first four passes as a Raider last Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles and gained 36 yards.
