PEOPLE : Here’s a Tip for Your Waitress
The folks who brought us “Miss Tight Jeans” were in town scouting hopefuls for the first “Prettiest Waitress in the U.S.A.” pageant.
Many among the 40 who showed up at the Hollywood Roosevelt weren’t waitresses exactly, but waitresses waiting to be actresses.
It’s a problem, said Jason Mershon of “Steppin’ Out Productions,” creator of this contest. So are “circuit girls,” who’ve honed a tiny talent and toned a great body and show up for Miss X, Y and Z.
As he spoke, a trio arrived from Edie’s Diner in the Marina--Jaimie, Candace and Yvette. Gershon perked up. “You girls are the cute, wholesome look that everybody loves.”
He would pick 25 for the state finals in January, he told them, and “you girls are in.” Each would have to come up with a $275 fee.
Why a pageant for waitresses? Many are lookers, Gershon explained: “All that running around helps them keep their legs in shape.”
Miss Prettiest Waitress needs only enough talent to kick through an opening number wearing a mini-tuxedo and balancing a tray. (Glasses will be glued down).
Jaimie, Candace and Yvette departed, presumably with visions of the $10,000 grand prize dancing in their heads. It will go to the national winner, to be crowned next summer in Palm Springs.
