HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Freshmen Lead Calabasas in Tennis

Calabasas High used freshmen in its top two singles slots and upset seventh-ranked Alhambra, 12-6, in a Southern Section Division II first-round tennis match Thursday at Alhambra.

No. 1 Shera Weigler and No. 2 Kirsten Gross won all six of their matches for the Coyotes (12-5). The pair lost only 13 games.

In other Southern Section first-round tennis matches:

Louisville 15, Wilson 3--Singles players Kerry Gallant, Kim Andre and Ashley Wire won all nine of their matches as the Royals (14-8) advanced in the Division III playoffs.

Harvard-Westlake 18, Gahr 0--The Wolverines (17-3) lost only two of 56 games in singles competition and rolled over visiting Gahr in a Division III match.

Hart 10, Chaminade 8--The Indians’ top players lost five of their six matches, but the others won nine of 12 to carry Hart (12-4). Chaminade’s top singles player, Laura Gross, lost only one game in sweeping her three matches.

VOLLEYBALL

All first-round matches:

Thousand Oaks d. Mater Dei, 15-8, 15-1, 15-9--Tricia Tuley had 12 kills and 13 digs to lead the host Lancers (20-5) in a Division I match.

Defense fueled the victory as four Lancers had 10 or more digs.

Harvard-Westlake d. Pasadena, 15-9, 15-9, 15-6--Amanda Selby had eight kills and Lindsay Powers had 21 assists to lead the Wolverines, ranked fifth in Division II. Harvard-Westlake is 13-4.

Saugus d. Charter Oak, 15-2, 15-4, 13-15, 15-5--Jodi Olsby had 47 assists and Lindsay Estes had 14 kills to lead the Centurions (13-2) in a Division III match. Saugus is ranked second in the Southern Section.

El Camino Real d. Carson, 15-6, 15-5, 15-7--The Conquistadores (12-3) handed Carson its first loss of the season. Jessica Dinaberg had 27 kills and Diane Sweet had 33 assists for El Camino Real in a City Section 4-A Division match.

L.A. Baptist d. Desert, 15-13, 15-1, 15-2--The Knights, ranked second in Division V of the Southern Section, improved to 15-0. Sarah Rameson had 15 kills and Jill De Ruyter had 22 assists for the Knights.

Birmingham d. Hamilton, 6-15, 15-9, 15-9, 7-15, 15-5--Maricela Valdez had 16 kills and Valery Vargas had 52 assists to lead the Braves (9-6).

Poly d. Franklin, 11-15, 15-9, 15-10, 15-8--Maria Abalos had 20 kills and Veronica Morales had 35 assists for the Parrots (13-1) in a 3-A Division match.

WATER POLO

Santa Barbara 17, Nordhoff 5--David Ford led the Rangers with three goals in a Southern Section Division III first-round match. Brad Kittredge and Todd Merrin each scored four goals for Santa Barbara, which led, 12-2, at halftime.
