The Belmont High cross-country teams won girls’ and boys’ City championships Saturday at Pierce College to fulfill a promise to Coach Gordon Weisenburger, who is retiring after 17 seasons.
Patty Trejo (18:37), Yolanda Gomez (18:52) and Auria Roberto (19:27) finished first, second and third as the Belmont girls placed five runners among the top eight to win an unprecedented fourth title in a row with 19 points.
Birmingham (75) and Garfield (100) were second and third.
Sixth- and 10th-place finishes by Wilburd Estrada and Ricardo Valenzuela helped Belmont edge Huntington Park, 50-54, to win its ninth title in 11 seasons. Defending champion Birmingham was third with 68 points.
Jorge Perea of Huntington Park sprinted away from Roosevelt’s Jaime Moreno in the final 100 meters to win in 15:30.
