SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Sunset League Dominates Division II
Based on results so far, Southern Section officials might want to rename the Division II girls’ volleyball tournament the Sunset League Invitational.
Four Sunset League teams--Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina and Fountain Valley--will play host to quarterfinal matches at 7 tonight. They’re among 13 Orange County teams still competing for six division titles.
Top-seeded and league-champion Edison (21-1) will meet unseeded Sunny Hills (17-1), and Fountain Valley (12-6), third in the league, will play fourth-seeded North Hollywood Harvard Westlake (13-4).
Marina (12-5), an at-large entry, will play unseeded Bishop Montgomery (13-3). Unseeded Huntington Beach (13-5), the league’s second-place team, will meet third-seeded Cerritos Gahr (15-1).
Marina has been the biggest surprise so far. The Vikings, led by senior outside hitter Jaime Wehrhan, upset second-seeded Long Beach Poly in the first round and swept Bell Gardens in the second.
The Vikings finished fourth in the league, but earned the division’s only at-large entry into the playoffs.
In Division I, Corona del Mar (17-0), top-ranked in the nation, plays host to Mira Costa. Defending section champion Laguna Beach (18-1) plays host to Capistrano Valley (15-2) in a rematch of last year’s semifinal. Newport Harbor (17-4) plays host to second-seeded Los Angeles Notre Dame Academy.
Valencia (15-3), the only county team remaining in Division IV, will play at unseeded La Canada (11-6), which advanced through the qualification round.
Top-seeded Capistrano Valley Christian (16-0), the defending State Division V champion, will play host to unseeded Covina Northview (16-3). Also in Division V, third-seeded Calvary Chapel (14-2) will play at unseeded La Verne Bonita (13-3), and unseeded Whittier Christian (12-5) will play host to second-seeded Los Angeles Baptist (16-0).
St. Margaret’s (11-1), top-seeded in Division VI, will play at unseeded Templeton (15-4).
