Burger King Settles Child-Labor Case: The nation’s second-largest fast-food chain has agreed to settle extensive child-labor charges against it by agreeing to pay a record $500,000 fine and creating a novel system for guarding against future violations. The charges date back to March, 1990, when the Labor Department charged Burger King Corp. with violating restrictions on hours for teen-agers under age 16. The agreement would create an independent ombudsman to oversee compliance with federal child labor laws throughout the 5,700-store chain.
