ABA on Abortion

I first became a member of the American Bar Assn. as a law student in 1980. In 1990, when the ABA rescinded its abortion rights resolution, many members resigned from the association. Although I hold strong beliefs about the constitutional right of privacy as it relates to abortion, I chose to remain a member of the ABA, both to work from within on this issue and because I value the membership for many reasons unrelated to abortion rights.

Now that the ABA has readopted its abortion rights resolution, attorneys against the resolution are quitting the ABA (Nov. 4) while many past members are rejoining in a show of support. As a 12-year member of the ABA, I count myself among the tens and possible hundreds of thousands of attorneys throughout the country who are proud to belong to an organization that refuses to stand by and watch Americans’ privacy rights whittled away.
