WEEKEND TV : ‘Capt. Planet’ Tackles the AIDS Crisis

The cartoon series “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” tackles the subject of AIDS this weekend with the vocal help of Elizabeth Taylor, Neil Patrick Harris and Danica McKellar.

Taylor plays the mother of a teen named Todd (Harris of “Doogie Howser, M.D.”) who finds he is HIV-positive. McKellar (Winnie Cooper on “The Wonder Years”) is the boy’s girlfriend. When evil forces spread misinformation regarding AIDS, it’s up to the mother--and Captain Planet and his gang--to show how misinformation and fear can arouse public prejudice.

The half-hour episode will be seen today at 6 a.m. on KCAL-TV Channel 9 and KNSD-TV Channel 39, at 6:30 a.m. on KEYT-TV Channel 3 and KMIR-TV Channel 36, at 11:30 a.m. on KNSD-TV Channel 39 again, and on Sunday at 5:35 a.m. and 2:35 p.m. on TBS, and 5 p.m. on TNT.
