Closing Libraries
The full impact of the news that the county will close 10 public libraries and reduce hours and services is not unnoticed by this reader. I began my love affair with libraries before I began elementary school and it’s a love affair that is still going on!
I can recall walking blocks and blocks to the nearest library as a child and entering “a new world.” An academic, sedate, meaningful world of less time spent watching TV and movies. In the summer of 1955 I discovered the gem of all Southland libraries, the main library at 5th and Hope, which was my second home until those two disastrous fires a few years ago.
A library is an escape from ignorance and the evils of modern society, and while it offers a chance for youth, it is also a haven for senior citizens.
