VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : La Jolla Rallies for Victory
After three close games, La Jolla routed Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World in Games 4 and 5 to earn a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional girls’ volleyball Division III playoffs Tuesday in La Jolla.
In winning, 17-15, 14-16, 13-15, 15-4, 15-3, the Vikings (30-6) also earned a Southern California semifinal match on Saturday. Rim of the World finished 18-3.
There were plenty of heroes for the Vikings, the 1992 San Diego Section Division III champions.
Julia Civardi had a team-high 22 kills and eight service aces. Misha Willoughby recorded 13 kills and 16 blocks. Jenny Weinbrecht also had 16 blocks, and Monica Bua added nine kills and six aces. Julie Plazak served five aces, and setters Jessa Lewis and Stephanie Edwards made numerous assists.
In another Division III match:
Newport Harbor 3, USDHS 0--Coming off an emotional five-game loss to Laguna Beach, Newport Harbor found enough energy to defeat USDHS, 15-11, 15-8, 15-9.
Host Newport Harbor (16-4) fell short in its passing efforts and relied heavily on its serving, finishing the match with 13 aces. Freshman Julie Hecker closed out the first game for the Sailors (16-4) with two aces and a service winner. In Game 2, outside hitter Amy Evans tied it, 8-8, with an ace down the middle, which sparked seven consecutive Newport Harbor points.
Trailing, 9-8, in the third game, Hecker served out the game. Sophomore Misty May led the Sailors with 12 kills. Susanne Robertson paced the Dons (15-13) with eight kills and three blocks.
Division IV
Los Angeles Baptist 3, Clairemont 0--Baptist remained perfect at 18-0 with a 15-3, 15-9, 15-10 victory over Clairemont (11-11).
Carpinteria 3, Holtville 2--Holtville gave Carpinteria (14-4) a run but fell, 15-10, 15-6, 7-15, 7-15, 15-10. Holtville, the San Diego Section champion, finished 13-5.
Division V
Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Bishop’s 0--Kathleen Bunce served a career-high 13 aces as the defending state-champion Eagles won, 15-3, 15-5, 15-2, to improve to 19-0. Kaylie Orr had three kills to lead The Bishop’s School (23-6).
Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 3, Christian 0--Calvary Chapel (16-2) downed the Patriots, 15-3, 15-6, 15-9. Leeana Miller had 10 kills for Christian (21-5).
