Long Beach Area : Ports and Railroad Agree to Muffle Train Noises
The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles and the Union Pacific Railroad have agreed to pay for sound walls and welded tracks to cut the noise made by freight trains running past residential neighborhoods in Long Beach.
Council members Tuesday lauded the agreement as a way to reduce noise without restricting the number or length of trains passing through the city.
The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles will pay $20 million to build sound walls and to landscape around them to help prevent graffiti.
The ports also will split the cost of a $17.9-million underpass on South Street between Cherry Avenue and Paramount Boulevard.
The railroad will pay about $500,000 to install welded rails along all of its main tracks.
