Two reputed gang members were wounded in what police suspect was a retaliation shooting carried out by a pair of rival gang members, authorities said Thursday.

The victims were taken to local hospitals with multiple wounds after the 10:30 p.m. shooting Wednesday near the intersection of Highland Street and Locust Avenue, Orange Police Sgt. Mike Pollok said.

One victim was identified as Noberto Rodriguez, 23, of Orange. The other victim has not yet been identified by police. Although their injuries were serious, they were not considered fatal, police said.

According to Pollok, the two victims and a third man were having a conversation near the intersection when two gunmen wearing black clothing and black gloves walked up to them.

“The two suspects walked up within 10 feet of them and started shooting,” Pollok said. “At least eight shots were fired.”

After shooting at the two victims, the gunmen fled, leaving only their gloves and bullet casings behind, Pollok said.

The third man standing next to the two victims was unharmed and also fled the scene.

The two gunmen, who were armed with handguns, are being sought for attempted murder, the sergeant said.

“Investigators feel this is a gang-related shooting and possibly a retaliation for past shootings in the city involving two rival gangs,” Pollok said. “The Orange Police Special Gang Task Detail and homicide detectives are handling the investigation.”

Police have requested that anyone with information about the shooting call either Investigator Jack Nanigian at (714) 744-7309 or the watch commander at (714) 744-7406.
