The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program this week received a $15,000 donation from Kaiser Permanente.

Police Chief Charles S. Brobeck, who received the gift at the City Council meeting Tuesday, said that the donation was much needed and would be well spent.

“It will help support (programs in) schools in the area,” Brobeck said of the donation.

The Irvine DARE program has an annual budget of $180,000 and provides counseling and guidance concerning drug abuse and gangs to area schoolchildren.

Mona Ziada, spokesperson for Kaiser Permanente in Anaheim, said Kaiser donates to DARE because its programs are effective.

She said the donation is part of an agreement between Kaiser Permanente and the city under which Kaiser is to contribute to a community group in return for a 25-year lease on a city-owned, 40-acre site near Sand Canyon Avenue and the San Diego Freeway in Irvine.
