BREA : City’s Job Center Selected for Award

The Brea Job Center has been selected by the League of California Cities as one of this year’s recipients of the Helen Putnam Award for Excellence.

Twenty-one other cities were honored for high-quality and effective programs, which other cities around the state can emulate, city officials said.

Mayor Burnie Dunlap received the award on behalf of the city from Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy at a special ceremony Nov. 16 in Sacramento. With Dunlap were the Rev. Lauren Woods of the Brea Foursquare Church and Job Center Supervisor Judy Campos.

The Job Center opened in 1990 to help day laborers obtain work by providing a location where employers can hire them. It was also created in response to complaints by residents about the fact that day workers were congregating on Brea street corners.

Last year, the Job Center provided 13,000 jobs, including 300 permanent ones. The center serves more than 100 laborers Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to noon. For more information, call (714) 990-6384.
