Deputies Kill Boy, Say He Shot at Them
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 17-year-old boy and wounded a 15-year-old boy Monday night during a gun battle in the unincorporated Athens area of South Los Angeles, authorities said.
Sheriff’s Deputy Diane Hecht said that the incident occurred about 6:45 p.m. when four deputies returned fire after they were shot at by about half a dozen people in an alley in the 11800 block of New Hampshire Avenue.
The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. The younger boy was taken to Harbor General Medical Center in Torrance where his condition was not available.
Hecht said the deputies saw “five or six males shooting weapons” in the alley and ordered them to drop their guns. Instead, “they began shooting at the deputies,” she said. When the deputies returned the gunfire, the others fled, Hecht said.
