THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES : MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK : Ruben Oronoz
College: Rancho Santiago
Sport: Basketball
Position: Forward
Class: Sophomore
Oronoz, who is 6 feet 7, led Rancho Santiago in scoring last season, averaging 12.5 points. But he can’t be content with that figure this season because, given his shooting talents, Coach Dana Pagett expects the total to be higher.
So far, Oronoz, who plays on the wing as well as at forward, hasn’t disappointed his coach.
The Whittier Christian High graduate is averaging 18.4 points and is coming off his biggest game of the season; he scored 22 points as Rancho Santiago beat Cerro Coso, 104-63, in the third-place game of the Chaffey tournament.
Another top performer:
Golden West’s Gerald Rhoden, who had 61 points and 21 rebounds for the Rustlers, who lost two of three in the Chaffey tournament.
