Caterpillar Inc. Expects 4th-Quarter Loss: Caterpillar Inc. said it expects to suffer a modest loss in the fourth quarter because of slumping European sales and losses in its Brazilian operations. The forecast revises the company’s earlier projection of a “marginally profitable” quarter, and comes despite a pretax gain of $50 million to $65 million from the sale of its lift-truck assets. Caterpillar said it has been hurt by foreign exchange rates and the adverse effect from income taxes. Expectations of a new investment tax credit are depressing sales in the United States, the company said. A loss in the fourth quarter would be Caterpillar’s seventh loss in the last eight quarters.
