William T. Choctaw was elected Walnut’s new mayor and Drexel L. Smith was chosen mayor pro tem last week during the annual reorganization of the City Council.

Choctaw, who replaces H. Thomas Sykes in the largely ceremonial role, promised to bring “humility, enthusiasm and passion” to the post.

In other action, Jack Isett was sworn in as the city’s newest council member. Isett, a teacher at Walnut High School, defeated six opponents in the Nov. 3 election to fill the three-year unexpired term of Ray T. Watson, who died of a heart attack in June.
