The New York Rangers were outpunched and outshot, but for the first time in five home games, not outscored.

Sergei Nemchinov’s breakaway goal midway through the third period broke a tie and gave the Rangers a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. The victory ended New York’s home losing streak at four games, its longest in nine years.

“It would have really hurt if we lost this one,” said Ranger goaltender Mike Richter, who shook off a personal slump to make 39 saves, 20 in the second period.

The Rangers survived a well-publicized rematch of last February’s fight between Tie Domi and Detroit’s Bob Probert. They fought 37 seconds into the game for more than a minute before going to the penalty box relatively unscathed.

Winnipeg 3, Calgary 3--Joel Otto and Gary Roberts scored third-period goals, lifting Calgary to a tie.

Winnipeg had taken a 3-1 lead on two goals by Alexi Zhamnov, only his second and third of the year, and Evgeny Davydov, countered only by a first-period goal by Joe Nieuwendyk’s 15th of the season.
