BYU-Hawaii Wins at NAIA Event

Defending champion Brigham Young Hawaii roared to its second consecutive NAIA Volleyball Championship with a 15-8, 15-8, 15-10 victory over California Baptist on Saturday night.

BYU-Hawaii (26-2), which beat Western Oregon 15-6, 15-5, 15-4 in the afternoon semifinals, did not lose a game in the national tournament.

Point Loma Nazarene was eliminated late Friday, 18-16, 15-8, 13-15, 6-15, 15-8 by Henderson (Ark.) State. Henderson then went to lose to California Baptist in Saturday’s semifinals.

Western Oregon finished third in the tournament by defeating Henderson State in five games.

TENNIS

Senior Kevin Bradley, seeded second, upended Frederick Axsater, his top-seeded University of San Diego teammate, 7-5, 6-4, to win the singles championship of the San Diego All-College Tournament at USD. Axsater was the defending champion.

In the doubles semifinals, the Torero teams of Axsater and Mark Huarte and Bradley and Ignacio Martinez advanced.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Menlo College got 25 points by Jason Stamps and shot 71% in the second half to top UC San Diego, 77-71, in the third-place game of the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament at Redlands College. Chris Moore led UCSD (3-4) with 19 points.

Vince Washington’s 15 points and 11 rebounds helped host Cal State Dominguez Hills overcome Point Loma Nazarene, 60-58. PLNC (3-3) got 16 points from Shawn DeLaittre, who came into the game with a 25.4 average.

GOLF

Arizona State teammates Keith Sbarbaro and Todd Demsey won spots in the Buick Invitational by finishing 1-2 in the ninth annual Buick Invitational Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Torrey Pines South.

Sbarbaro, a Poway High graduate, topped the 95-player field by shooting a 69. Demsey, who attended Torrey Pines High, was one of three players to record a 71. Demsey defeated Craig Anderson of Fallbrook and Pat Perez of Torrey Pines High in a one-hole playoff.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Tennessee Chattanooga shot 63% in the second half to overcome a six-point deficit and deal the University of San Diego a 75-61 defeat in the 7-Up Desert Classic at Nevada Las Vegas. The Toreros (0-3) got 20 points from Jill Shaver but were outrebounded 52-37 by UTC. Chris Enger was named to the all-tournament team.

Center Erica Scholl scored 26 points and grabbed a school-record 30 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to a 66-61 victory over Southern California College. Scholl, a 6-1 senior, surpassed the record of 25 set by Mary Egan in 1982. UCSD improved to 3-4.

Point Loma Nazarene limited La Verne to 20% shooting in the first half and, behind Stacee Eggers’ 12 points and 11 apiece by Lori Carper and Tiffany Stutz, took a 66-61 victory at Golden Gym. PLNC improved to 3-3.
