900 Psychotherapy Is Too Disconnecting

Thank you for your article regarding psychotherapy via a 900 number (“Calling for Help,” Nov. 24).

As a seasoned therapist who has had extensive experience with telephone crisis-intervention therapy, I must register my alarm.

Already our lives are victimized by disconnection from others, alienation and pressured lives which are lacking in quality. This form of therapy--disconnecting therapist from client--simply exacerbates our various pathologies.

There are many therapists who are skilled in treating problems quickly and efficiently who are willing to cooperate with clients regarding cost and scheduling.

A 900 telephone call is very expensive and a dismal substitute for in-person therapy.
