HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : McCoy Lifts Faith Baptist, 73-72

Adrian Klemm of St. Monica High missed a pair of free throws with two seconds to play and Faith Baptist escaped with a 73-72 victory Wednesday night in a first-round game of the Thousand Oaks boys’ basketball tournament.

Trailing, 72-70, Faith Baptist (5-0) tied the score with 35 seconds left on a basket by T.J. McCoy (15 points), and McCoy hit the front end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds remaining to give the Contenders the lead.

McCoy scored eight of Faith Baptist’s 15 points in the fourth quarter and made seven of eight free throws in the game.

Tonny Hoggatts had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Faith Baptist.

Alex Davis scored game-high 25 for St. Monica (2-2).

In other boys’ basketball games:

Paraclete 59, Trona 35--The Spirits shut out Trona in the fourth quarter, 21-0, in a Boron tournament first-round game at Boron High. Sean O’Gara led Paraclete (2-3) with 19 points and Brian Lathrop scored 10 points.

Carson 78, Chatsworth 65--Center Brady Mertes led the Chancellors with 18 points and eight rebounds in a nonleague game at Carson. Teammate Trenell Floyd added 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.

Santa Clara 55, Littlerock 41--Dave Varela scored eight of his game-high 17 points in the first quarter for the host Saints (4-1), who led, 20-2, after the first quarter in a nonleague game.

Santa Clara’s Brian Clark chipped in with 12 points, seven in the first quarter, and Jason Guerrero added nine.

Louis Bryant led the Lobos with 12 points.

Rosemead 74, Montclair Prep 62--Howard Hyland scored 19 points to lead Rosemead (4-1) in the Flintridge Prep tournament championship at Flintridge Prep.

Jerome Joseph led Montclair Prep (5-2) with 15 points, and Akil Anderson scored 13 points.

Hueneme 55, Newbury Park 52--Wendell Nunnery and David Andrade scored baskets in the final 40 seconds for Hueneme (1-0) in a first-round game of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Nunnery led Hueneme with 20 points. Andrade added 13 and Tremaine Jones had 12.

Junior point guard Keith Smith of Newbury Park (1-3) led all scorers with 21 points and also had six assists. Smith’s three-point basket with less than two minutes to play gave the Panthers a 52-51 lead.

Ojai Valley 51, Cornerstone Christian 29--Fernando Villalobos had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead host Ojai Valley in a Condor League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Quartz Hill 61, Canyon 30--Guard Shannon Nash scored 11 of her 13 points in the first quarter as host Quartz Hill (2-0) opened a 25-6 lead in a nonleague game.

Rebel forward Heather Lewis had eight points and seven rebounds. Jenny White and Wendy Wiggins each scored six points for Canyon (3-1).

Costa Mesa 51, Alemany 49--Alemany’s Kathy Brown missed a jump shot in the final seconds of the second-round game of the Brea tournament.

Sophomore Samantha Rigley scored 18 points to lead Alemany (5-1). Olympia DiCamilli scored a game-high 21 points for Costa Mesa.

Bell-Jeff 51, Channel Islands JV 42--Christina Ticsay scored 17 points to lead Bell-Jeff in a first-round game of the Rio Mesa tournament. Lori Talley had 13 points and six assists for the Guards (3-0) and Cathy Flores added nine points and 12 rebounds.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Buena 4, Simi Valley 0--Bulldog forward Juan Melgoza scored two goals for Buena (2-0) in a nonleague win at Simi Valley

It was Buena’s first win over the Simi Valley in five tries, dating to 1988. Peter Maione and Temo Sanchez also scored for the Bulldogs.

Kennedy 6, Chatsworth 0--Sean Dudra scored two goals for visiting Kennedy (8-1-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Alemany 3, Calabasas 0--Rosana Mellon, Michelle Carrajan and Jamie Malkan scored for the Indians (1-2) in the second half.
