GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Tamamasui Sets School Record as Westminster Beats Century
Rachel Kavan scored 20 points and Lisa Tamamasui had a school-record 18 rebounds to help Westminster to a 41-38 victory over Century in the semifinals of the Santa Ana Valley girls’ basketball tournament Thursday.
Tamamasui broke the single-game record of 15, set by Cornethia Young last season.
Westminster (2-0) will play Santa Ana in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
In other Santa Ana Valley tournament games:
Santa Ana 33, Inglewood 23--Cynthia Trotter had 16 points and seven steals for Santa Ana (4-1). Sevena Richards had 11 points for Inglewood.
La Quinta 67, Laguna Beach 48--Linda Rodriguez scored 21 points to lead La Quinta (2-0) past Laguna Beach, which got 20 points from Cole Stephens, in a consolation game.
In the Brea-Olinda tournament:
Cerritos Gahr 59, Rancho Alamitos 55--Rhonda Anderson scored 16 points to lead Gahr (4-1) to a quarterfinal victory over Rancho Alamitos (1-1), which got 22 points from Akilah Rodgers.
St. Bernard 55, Ocean View 43--Tricia Lindquist had 14 points and five assists for Ocean View (4-2) in a quarterfinal victory. St. Bernard is 3-0.
In the Savanna tournament:
Edison 93, Alta Loma 39--Joan Paje scored 20 points to lead Edison (2-1) past Alta Loma (1-2) in the fifth-place game.
In the Brea-Olinda girls’ tournament:
Tustin 39, Esperanza 35--Sarah Davis had 11 points for Tustin (2-3), which outscored Esperanza 17-11 in the fourth quarter of a consolation-round game.
Mission Viejo 37, Newport Harbor 29--Maggie Jorska had 14 points for Mission Viejo (3-3) in a consolation-round game. Melissa Schutz nine points for Newport Harbor (2-2), which was playing without leading scorer Kala Ross, who is ill.
In nonleague play:
Capistrano Valley Christian 61, Downey Life Christian 4--Ivana Kovacic had 19 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (4-1). Life Christian is 0-3.
Western 35, Rosary 21--Jennifer Christensen had 19 points for Western (4-2). Teammates Christine Collins and Kwanzaa Gibson each had nine rebounds.
Canyon 44, Loara 32--Deanna Ziesman had 10 points for visiting Canyon (4-0).
Whittier Christian 42, Western Christian 40--Denise Huizing scored 13 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter, for Whittier Christian (3-1). Huizing and Ila Borders each had eight rebounds. Melanie Smith had 21 points for Western Christian (1-1).
Mater Dei 68, St. Joseph 24--Leticia Oseguera had 20 points and 10 rebounds for host Mater Dei (2-1).
