Notes about your surroundings
Santiago Oaks Trip--South Coast Audubon is hosting a midweek bird walk at Santiago Oaks Regional Park in Orange on Thursday.
The park’s old pines and oaks along Santiago Creek are home to a variety of birds, including hermit thrushes, California thrashers, rufous-sided towhees, California towhees and, occasionally, sapsuckers.
There is a $2 day-use fee at the park.
The trip begins at 8 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch; the group will bird-watch at the park in the afternoon as well.
The park is at 2145 N. Windes Drive in Orange. To reach it, take the Costa Mesa Freeway to Katella Avenue off-ramp, go east to Windes Drive, make a left and proceed to park.
Young Audubons Meeting--South Coast Audubon will also host a meeting for children ages 5 to 12 at the Boys & Girls Club of San Clemente on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Participants will be making pine cone bird feeders. The club is at 1304 Calle Valle.
Nature Crafts Program--The Oak Canyon Nature Center in Anaheim is sponsoring a holiday nature crafts workshop for children Saturday.
There will be an emphasis on materials from nature used in the projects, which are meant for decoration or as gifts.
Two sessions will be held, the first from 10 a.m. to noon and the second from 1 to 3 p.m. While craft activities in the identical sessions are designed for children ages 6 to 10, all ages are welcome; children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.
There is a $6.50 fee per child, and pre-registration is required. For more information, call the center at (714) 998-8380.
Oak Canyon Nature Center is at 6700 Walnut Canyon Road, Anaheim.
