Hura Leads La Mirada to Title in Southern Section Division VIII
Tailback Ron Hura rushed for 145 yards in 28 carries, 118 in the second half, to lead La Mirada to a 28-7 victory over San Marino on Saturday night in the Southern Section Division VIII championship game at San Marino.
Stymied for most of the first half by a hard-hitting San Marino (10-3) defense, unseeded La Mirada (10-4) went to ball control in the second half and Hura carried them to the title.
Hura gave the Matadors a tie late in the second quarter, turning a 34-yard screen pass from Mike Moschetti into a touchdown to make it 7-7.
Hura set up three-second half touchdowns, two by Moschetti on a one-yard sneak and a seven-yard bootleg, and a five-yard run by Albert Smith.
San Marino took a 7-0 lead on its first possession when tailback Tom Moreland ran 29 yards for a touchdown.
Moschetti completed 12 of 19 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown. San Marino quarterback Scott Shaw completed only 13 of 34 passes for 115 yards. He threw an interception.
La Mirada lost standout receiver Alex Khasaempantha late in the second quarter when he collided with a goal post and suffered a broken arm.
