OUTLOOK
Although Erin Waggoner, the 1991 league MVP and ’92 first-team all-league selection, is now at UC Riverside, the Comanches are still considered the favorites to win the league title. With Petronis and Rathod, first-team selections last season, Canyon has a potent one-two scoring punch in the post. Rathod averaged 10 points and 13 rebounds and Petronis averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds last season. Brown also returns, after making honorable mention all-league as a freshman last season. She will take over for Waggoner at the point. “We don’t need any 20-point scorers,” Fitzgibbons said. “If everyone contributes, we’ll be fine. Sure we’ll miss Erin, but what will really make the difference is if the younger kids contribute.” Among the newcomers are Fish, a 6-foot sophomore who will back up Rathod, and Spjut, a 5-11 point guard. Fitzgibbons said both should make an immediate impact. “We have a great mix,” he said. “The team works well together on and off the court.” Canyon’s study habits showed in the classroom last season as the team earned honorable mention academic All-American honors, Fitzgibbons said.
