Alhambra : Karaoke Permit Rejected
The City Council overturned a permit granted by the Planning Commission to allow karaoke in an East Valley Boulevard restaurant.
In a 5-0 vote Monday, the council supported an appeal brought by Vice Mayor Barbara Messina, who asked that the city develop guidelines for karaoke clubs before granting permits.
Staff was directed to establish a moratorium on new karaoke applications. The moratorium will be voted on at the Jan. 11 council meeting.
City officials are concerned that some karaoke clubs may be centers of crime and prostitution.
“We have a number of karaoke operations in the city,” Councilman Boyd Condie said. “Some are fine, and some are not.”
