SAN DIEGO : Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting
A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a man downtown and the wounding of three others after a fight near a trolley stop, police said.
Police arrested Derrick Delmont Lucas, 25, of San Diego, in connection with the slaying, Lt. Barbara Harrison said. Lucas was taken into custody by police during a routine patrol along the 800 block of Market Street, Harrison said.
Police believe Lucas and a group of others were involved in a fistfight at 9:58 p.m. Monday on the sidewalk of 11th Avenue, near the C Street trolley station, officials said. The fight was over drugs, police said.
Witnesses told police a man began firing a gun during the fight. Killed by a bullet was a bystander, Alvarado J. Rodriguez, 40, who was shot in the chest.
Three other bystanders were wounded, Harrison said. Jose Ramirez, 26, and Jose Garcia, 27, were both treated at UC San Diego Medical Center, Harrison said. A third man wounded by gunfire, Roberto Guzman, 21, did not require hospitalization, Harrison said.
